Safety Plan for Concrete Wall Formwork

Safety Plan for Concrete Wall Formwork

Implementing a future-proof and effective concrete wall formwork can be a lot of hard work and somewhat risky without the right safety plans in mind. Having a qualified safety plan for the formwork system can further ensure the proper execution of such construction projects while also avoiding any undesired events.

Usually, safety plans begin in the first stages, during the management of a project. All kinds of equipment utilisation practices, construction procedures and work supervision must contain guidelines to ensure the safety of the public, along with the workers.

Every project planner, manager and formwork designer working on the project must follow these guidelines. If you are wondering how to produce great safety planning, following the OSHA regulation is a globally acceptable standard you can follow. Here are some steps of the same.

  • Inspection And Supervision:
It is very important to practice critical supervision during concrete retaining wall formwork placement, concrete pouring or stripping of the formwork. The appointed supervisor will ensure that the erection process is done as per the design and follows all safety protocols, further avoiding any case of member overloading.
They will also see to it that no unusual loads are carried if the formwork system does not permit it. In addition, any kind of filed modification in the erection procedure, forms or falsework should not get allowed without consulting the form designer.
  • Access For Workers:
Any work that is getting executed in elevated positions must have an accessible working platform for all workers. Long ladders being used to reach the top must have a passing or rest platform as well.
In other constructions, like bridges, it is crucial to use specific scaffolds that can aid in stripping piers, forms and decks. Barriers and safety signs should be placed at all corners to keep unauthorised personnel at bay, especially during working hours. All access points and platforms must follow OSHA requirements.
  • Regulation Of Concreting Practices:
Concrete pouring is perhaps one of the riskiest parts of this job; hence proper regulation is an integral aspect of safety planning. Formwork drawings often provide the rate and sequence of concrete placement limitations.
All such limitations must be considered before continuing the project. While pouring or concrete placement, unbalanced form loading should be avoided at all costs. For example, in slab and beam construction, fill the beams first and only then work outward. Make sure you are equally placing the slabs. Bettering the stability of the formwork system is easier by concreting the columns a day prior to the slabs.
  • Shoring, Reshoring:
Installing any kind of bent jacks, defective timbre, or out-of-plumb shores should not get permitted. This can hinder the support of design loads and ruin the structure’s sturdiness. While concreting, the supervisor should monitor all materials going in. this will help figure out any issue quicker and correct them whenever required.

Reputable companies like Nova Formworks ensure all such safety measures are taken. This is also why they are the leading force in the industry and the most reliable formwork construction service you can hire.

How Aluminum Formworks Saves Your Construction Time?

How Aluminum Formworks Saves Your Construction Time?

Formwork is the fundamental structure or skeleton of a concrete structure. The formwork has to be
designed before pouring the concrete materials. Typically, the construction workers develop the
formwork using different materials. For example, timber is the commonest material, though it is not
suitable for large-scale projects.

Timber can soak moisture from the environment and become weaker with the advent of time.
Nevertheless, it changes shape due to excessive moisture. Instead of timber, many construction
engineers prefer using metallic formwork nowadays. Among different metal formworks, aluminium is
popular due to its sturdiness.

The aluminum shuttering for the formwork design is time-saving for construction workers. As a result,
you can finish the projects earlier, which leads to cost-efficiency. In the following section, you can find
more benefits of using aluminium formwork for construction projects.

What Is Aluminium Formwork?

Aluminium formwork is a popular formwork technique for developing concrete structures nowadays.
You can use this formwork instead of using steel formwork, which can be costly. On the other hand,
creating timber formwork is time-consuming, and it leads to a higher expense in project management.

You can notice the use of aluminium framework in all first work countries nowadays. According to
industry experts, aluminum formwork reduces the cost by 15% when compare with steel formwork. On
the other hand, you can quickly create such formworks, as you do not need to deal with the hassles of
welding steel plates.

1. Faster Assembling and Removal

The aluminium formworks are easy to assemble and remove. You can easily assemble such formworks
for different kinds of concrete projects. The best thing is that you can achieve accurate measurements
without any hassles.

Similar to the assembling process, removal is also a crucial factor. In the case of timber formwork,
removal is not easy, and the developers waste resources. Steel formwork can be removed, though you
have to use cutter to cut the welded sheets and rods. In cases of aluminium, you do not have to deal
with such hassles. As a result, it saves time in dealing with the formwork assembling and removing.

2. Aluminium Is Reusable

Many concrete formworks do not remain reusable due to many reasons. For example, timber may
become fragile due to moisture, and construction workers do not use them again. Steel is a popular
sturdy option for concrete formwork, though it is not easy to assemble and remove.

The aluminum formwork is simple to assemble and remove. As a result, it saves time in concrete
construction. On the other hand, the aluminium formworks are reusable for other concrete projects. Aluminium is a lost-lasting metal, which does not catch rust.

Excellent Stability and Support

The aluminium formwork offers flawless stability and support to concrete contractors. As a result, the
projects have been done with precision following all crucial safety standards. Therefore, concrete
projects will be safer and more durable.

Nova Formworks offers different kinds of advanced solutions for concrete formworks. The company can
provide an effortless aluminum shuttering service to clients.

Causes of Concrete Formwork Failure

Causes of Concrete Formwork Failure

The construction of a concrete structure requires formwork to support the concrete loads after the pouring process. From here, the formwork stays in place, becomes hard, and gains some strength. Depending on the concrete, the formworks remain for 7 to 15 days.

Most Common Causes of Concrete Formwork Failure

Let us now take a look at some of the top causes of formwork failure here.

Inadequate Bracing

Improper bracing during construction can fail formwork. Having improper horizontal and cross bracing of shores can lead to this primarily. Lateral force generates from poor bracing and creates lateral deformation. Due to failure at one point, the bracing allows the collapse over a large portion, creating multiple damages. However, this isn’t the case with plastic shuttering.

Short Of Concrete Placement Control

It is essential to regulate the rate of concrete placement on a horizontal framework. It creates improper loading balance, resulting in formwork failure. The temperature, chemistry, vertical placement, and concrete vibration impact the lateral pressure to act on the formwork.

Strength, stability, and mechanical properties make plastic formwork preferable over conventional shuttering.

Inadequate Strength Development

It is another factor that contributes to formwork failure. The elements of the formwork should have adequate cross-sections to give strength to the loads imposed on the formwork. This is of great importance to check the strength when casting a rising level of building construction. The concrete may fail at the anchors resulting in scaffolding and collapse.

Lack or Improper Formwork Design

Improper design of the formwork by engineers makes the formwork fragile to carry a suitable load. This problem arises during construction and requires the designers to anticipate the actual design to support the formwork. It requires checking the safety factors of the design by a suitable engineer. Plastic formwork is a cost-effective and flexible option that makes it more convincing than concrete formwork.

Premature Formwork Stripping

Premature stripping of any form or removal of the shores requires attention, otherwise can lead to disastrous problems. This can lead to severe problems in multistorey buildings. Here, one floor’s collapse leads to the other’s collapse. It can happen due to early stripping of formwork which is not desirable. It may ask for reconstruction due to the demolition of the building.

Inadequate Soils Below Mudsills

The formworks collapse due to soils under the mudsills. These are the base of a shore. The mudsill can be like a frame, timber plank, small footing or any pedestal. It is important to choose the right shuttering for concrete construction. It can prevent the chance of sudden failure of the construction.

So, it is preferable to choose plastic formwork over conventional concrete ones. It can reduce the chance of damage, the plastic form is easy to fix and clean, and it requires less shuttering oil.

Need for Premium Formwork for Construction

How To Remove Concrete From Drain Pipes?

How To Remove Concrete From Drain Pipes?

The practice of flushing drain for concrete is not only popular but also surprisingly easy to do. Of course, it’s easier to regularly wash cement or other construction materials off equipment, clothing, and bodies into residential plumbing fittings. Nevertheless, you’ll be glad you washed outdoors while standing in a pool of dirty water because the concrete deposit in the shower drain has clogged the pipe.
We questioned several seasoned plumbers about how often they find concrete clogging drains and what solutions they’ve seen used to unclog them.

Why Does Concrete Get Stuck in Drain Pipes?

Concrete usually enters drain pipes when construction tools, mixers, or buckets are washed directly into the drainage system. While wet cement may initially flow with water, it gradually settles inside the pipe and hardens over time. This reduces the pipe’s diameter, restricts water flow, and can eventually cause complete blockages if left untreated.

Does Cement Obstruct Drainage?

If cement or concrete waste goes down the toilet, it could clog the pipes. As you add and let each layer of cement dry, your drains will get smaller. As the material builds up and settles in the bends and corners of the pipe, it is likely to affect both the water pressure and flow rate. Because of this obstruction, sewage and trash will begin to back up as the volume of waste increases. Unfortunately, there is no way around clearing the drain for concrete, so you may either do it yourself or hire a professional.

Methods To Remove Concrete from Drain Pipes

You shouldn’t worry if you find concrete in your shower drain or sewage line after it’s too late to remove it. Instead, consider the following removal procedures before shelling out thousands for brand new pipes if the blockage isn’t too severe.

Electrical And Mechanical Devices

Using mechanical instruments like augers (or plumbing snakes) is best left to professionals or people with expertise or training in drain cleaning. Like the jet blaster, there is typically no benefit to doing the task yourself due to the high hiring prices, lost time, and danger of damage to the rented equipment or your pipes.
The use of a drill makes it easy to flush away hardened concrete. In certain cases, a jet blaster may be required to eliminate bigger chunks of concrete. You’ll need an auger long enough to reach the obstruction, however.

Acid

Even though acid can break down concrete, it is dangerous to do this without the right training. This is because the acid eats away at the limestone in the cement, a key component of concrete, while also dissolving the gravel, sand, and water.

Although this is a reliable means of dissolving cement or concrete, we caution our clients to exercise extreme caution.

Snake Pipe

A plumbing snake is often called an auger. It is a long steel cable that removes obstructions. One may twist the cable’s end by pushing it as far down the drain as possible and turning the handle. Keep doing this until the drain is tidy or until you decide to try something else. Also, you can add concrete slab for drainage to keep your drain safe from concrete blockage.

Pipe Replacement

There may come a time when the cement build-up in your sewage system is too great for a simple cleaning to restore proper flow. In addition, the cement or concrete may have hardened to become unworkable.
Nova Formworks is a leading name for high-quality dependable concrete slab formwork systems. The company offers formwork for concrete slab for drainage with superior finish and focus on quality.

Structural Aluminium Formwork – The Best Choice for Construction

Structural Aluminium Formwork – The Best Choice for Construction

Due to rapidly growing urbanisation all across the globe, the demand for cost-efficient, safe and eco-friendly infrastructure has drastically increased.

The expansion of the high-rise residential complex trend has left the industry needing fast construction work.
To facilitate such a booming demand, constructors have turned to aluminium formwork.

What is an Aluminium Based Formwork?

The Aluminium Formwork System, also known as Mivan Shuttering, is a building construction system used to form cast-in-place concrete structures. It is also a control and scheduling system for other construction fields such as steel reinforcement, mechanical and electrical conduits and concrete placement.

Aluminium Formwork System is ideal for load-bearing wall construction. On the other hand, traditional formwork comprised of timber and plywood is not ideal for the high pressure of fresh concrete on the wall.

Why is Aluminium the Best Choice in the Construction Industry?

As mentioned before, the industry is in dire need of construction techniques that are; fast, reliable and cost-effective.

Aluminium has emerged as the ideal choice when it comes to construction. Here are some reasons describing the advantages of using aluminium column formwork to help you make better decisions for future projects:

1) Cost-Effective

To provide quality infrastructure to the masses, it is crucial to factor in the required cost for the project.

Using aluminium as a material for the formwork might seem to be an expensive affair. However, in the long run, it is an economical construction method.

In addition to better quality, aluminium-based formworks also tackle the problem of hiring too many workers.

2) A Safer Alternative

The best building is one that can withstand the tests of time for decades to come.
The strength of the building is directly associated with the type and strength of the formwork used. Because a larger workspace is secured compared to traditional methods, site workers have more room to work, resulting in a safer work environment.

3) Environment-Friendly

Owing to a drastically accelerated climate change, eco-friendly construction practices are slowly becoming the norm.
Aluminium formwork offers a much more environmentally-sound choice due to its semi-permanent nature and the scope of recyclability. These formworks aim at reducing wastage at the site of construction to promote a better environment.

4) Efficient Speed of Construction

Several projects are delayed owing to factors such as poor construction practices. To achieve the objectives within the time frame, the contractors compromise the quality of work which downgrades the durability of the building. Therefore, the reputation of the company is at risk of poor techniques.

Formworks made of aluminium cut the time taken for construction. Opting for aluminium reduces the time taken for assembling and disassembling up to 50%.

Wrapping it Up
Understanding the type of formwork required for your construction project is integral to its success. Deshuttering Period as Per IS 456 – 2000

Deshuttering Period as Per IS 456 – 2000

The deshuttering period is one where the shuttering mold is removed. This is done when the concrete reaches maturity and is highly dependent on the ambient temperature. This process requires certain precautions, and specific knowledge is necessary to ensure that the removal process is flawless and up to standards.

The formwork is prepared with a variety of materials, including plastic, plywood, steel, etc. However, the material of the formwork will not influence the disassemble period.

IS Code for Concrete Formwork Removal

IS Code 456 specifies the removal of formwork for different kinds of concrete elements.

Formwork Removal Time for Varying Concrete Elements

Here is a list of various concrete elements and their formwork removal time:

  • Vertical formwork of wall, column and beam- 16-24 hours
  • Removal of props under-slab up to 4.5 meters- 7 days
  • Soffit to beams props- 7 days
  • Removal of props under arches and beams up to 6 meters- 14 days

When should Formwork Removal be Initiated?

Once the concrete has undergone at least twice as much stress as it may have at the time of removal, the shuttering can be removed.

In layman’s terms, the maturity of the concrete determines when the form should be removed. When the concrete reaches its design strength through hardening and can withstand the load occurring on its own, the de-molding process can be started.

Concrete progressively and over time develops its compressive strength.

Can Modern Formwork Systems Reduce Deshuttering Time?

The deshuttering periods specified in IS 456:2000 are general guidelines intended to ensure that concrete has developed sufficient strength before formwork is removed. However, modern formwork technologies are designed to optimize the construction cycle while still complying with these structural requirements.

For example, some advanced slab formwork systems use a drop head mechanism, which allows the slab panels to be removed earlier while the supporting props remain in place to continue carrying the load. Since the props are not removed, the slab continues to receive adequate support as the concrete gains strength.

This approach offers several practical benefits on site:

  • Enables earlier reuse of slab panels on subsequent floors.
  • Reduces the amount of formwork required for repetitive floor cycles.
  • Improves material utilisation and site productivity.
  • Helps maintain faster construction schedules without compromising structural support.

It is important to note that early panel removal does not mean early prop removal. The supporting props should remain in position for the duration recommended by the structural engineer and the applicable provisions of IS 456:2000. The actual deshuttering schedule should always be based on concrete strength, span, loading conditions, curing, and site-specific engineering assessments.

Factors that Influence the Formwork Removal Process

The process of removing the shuttering is influenced by certain factors and elements that are involved in the construction process. In the case of some special concrete or admixture, the shutter removal process can vary.

Some other factors that affect the formwork removal process are as follows:

  • Types of Cement

Cement that sets quickly and cements with rapid hardening will reach greater strength in a shorter time period than other types of cement.

  • Temperature

Higher temperatures cause the cement to hydrate more quickly and the concrete to harden more quickly. However, due to the cement’s rapid hydration, shrinkage cracks also appear at the same time.

  • Concrete Grade

A superior grade of concrete gives optimal strength in the shortest time, subsequently making the concrete formwork removal process quicker.

  • Cement Grade

The compressive strength value will impact the proportion of strength and growth, which varies between OPC 43 and OPC 53. The formwork removal duration varies due to this.

Precautions to Keep in Mind While Deshuttering

Dismantling of formwork requires some necessary precautions for the workers’ welfare and the quality of work. Here are some general precautions that should be upheld during the stripping of formwork.

  • Always make sure that the necessary safety arrangements are handy.
  • Appropriation supervision is required during the process to ensure the quality of the concrete.
  • If you notice honeycombs on the surface of the concrete, rectify them immediately to avoid further complications.
  • Ensure proper curing of the concrete.

Final Words

The de-molding process, according to IS 456-2000, is fairly straightforward. However, it is essential to know the guidelines and precautions while dismantling the framework. In addition, understanding the factors influencing the disassemble process can help you provide better services.

Nova Formwork is a group that deals in manufacturing an extensive range of the best construction solutions and equipment for their customers.

Types of Scaffolding Used in Construction

Types of Scaffolding Used in Construction

Scaffolding is a temporary structure of poles, pipes or wood to help support a structure and work as a platform used by construction workers to move safely while operating in elevated positions. A scaffold primarily consists of steel and timber.

The primary characteristics of scaffolding are, sturdiness, stability and strength to support the weight of workers and the material placed on it.

The element of scaffolding is crucial for the majority of the construction process. Construction workers utilize various kinds of scaffolding based on the specific requirements of the construction project. Each scaffolding has its advantages and uses. Some common types of scaffolding used in construction are:

1) Single Scaffolding

Single scaffolding is placed parallel to the wall of a structure with the help of vertical supports known as standards. The horizontal supports are called ledgers and these are used to connect to the vertical supports at an even angle. These scaffolds are connected for support with the help of the holes in the building (putlogs).

Single scaffolding is more often used for brick masonry.

2) Suspended Scaffolding

The working platform in suspended scaffolding is suspended from roofs using wire ropes, chains, etc., and can be raised or lowered to the desired level. This kind of scaffolding is used for painting, pointing, and repair work, among other things.

3) Steel Scaffolding

Steel scaffolding is built with steel tubes that are held together by fittings or steel couplers. It is very convenient to construct or dismantle steel scaffolding. This scaffolding has several advantages such as higher durability, greater strength and better resistance to fire.

Steel scaffolding is not the most economical option. However, it gives the construction workers a safer work environment and is extensively used these days.

4) Patented Scaffolding

Patented scaffolding is also built with steel. However, these scaffolding are equipped with special frames and couplings and are available as ready-made scaffolding. The working platform that is placed on brackets can be adjusted as per the requirement. This makes the scaffolding highly convenient.

5) Cantilever Scaffolding

In cantilever scaffolding, the standards are held up on a series of needles. The needles are then taken out by passing through the holes in the walls. This is called single-frame scaffolding.

In the case of the double frame or independent scaffolding, the needles are erected inside the floor through openings. A greater amount of care has to be given while constructing the cantilever scaffolding.

6) Double Scaffolding

Double scaffolding is primarily utilized in stone masonry and is also called mason’s scaffolding. Due to the toughness of the stone walls, the creation of holes is difficult. Therefore, two rows of scaffolding are constructed to increase the strength of the structure. To further enhance the strength of the scaffolding, cross braces and rakes are also used.

The choice of scaffolding should be based on the requirements of the project at hand. Therefore, one must have relevant knowledge about various kinds of scaffolds to make a better decision.

Nova Formwork is a group that deals in manufacturing an extensive range of formwork to provide the best and most reliant construction solutions and equipment to their customers.
