Box Culvert- Uses & Advantages

Box Culvert- Uses & Advantages

Located under a railway or a tunnel, Culvert is a tunnel that encompasses a stream or a small rivulet of water. It acts as a bridge and ensures the passage of traffic. It is typically put in areas where there is a natural flow of water and serves the purpose of the flow controller.

Culverts are available in various shapes such as elliptical, round, flat bottomed, box-like, and pear-shaped. They are categorized based on several factors such as roadway height, hydraulic, upstream elevation, etc.

Mentioned below are various kinds of culverts:

  1. Box culvert (single or multiple)
  2. Pipe culvert (single or multiple)
  3. Arch culvert
  4. Pipe-Arch culvert (single or multiple)
  5. Bridge culvert
  6. Metal box culvert

Concrete particularly Reinforced Concrete (RCC) is used to make box culverts. These are the most commonly used types of culverts. The toughest part in making a box culvert is that a totally dry surface is required to install the box culvert. So, if the base is not firm, it becomes very hard to set it up.

The precast concrete box culverts are used in place of circular concrete pipes. They drain very huge amounts of water, can easily handle the flow of water more than the regular pipes, and provide superior strength. The installation of box culverts is easier and more convenient as compared to other kinds of culverts. It is possible to make box culverts in advance and whenever the time comes, just put it at the place where the culvert is needed.

Box Culverts are used for drainage purposes. They are also used to make tunnels and used for storage as well as material handling. Some culverts act as bridges. They easily accommodate both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. We can choose the kind of culvert in accordance with our specific needs. With precast box culverts, factors such as rain, site condition, temperature, etc do not matter.

Advantages of Box Culvert

Box Culverts are very cost-effective as:

  • The box culvert has a firm frame structure.
  • The construction of the box culvert is very simple
  • It is ideal for non-perennial streams where there is lesser significance of scrub depth and the soil is not very strong.
  • The bottom slab of the box culvert puts less pressure on soil.
  • Box culverts are affordable because of their rigidity as well as monolithic action.
